Happy New Year (and business)!

New (?) chair?
New year, new office!

LOGOS Structural is now a fully functional business! I have a logo, an office, a website, insurance, and most importantly clients. New businesses also need names. A couple of weeks ago I discussed the meaning designed into our logo...but I neglected to explain the actual name! The companies subtext "Logical structural engineering for all" is a hint at one aspect LOGOS.

LOGOS is actually a word with Greek roots. It is one of the three words used to describe different ways to persuade an audience; ETHOS, PATHOS, and LOGOS. ETHOS is employed when a speaker uses their character (ETHOS), or credibility, to convince an audience. When someone uses emotion to persuade, PATHOS is being leveraged. LOGOS is the logical argument. It involves using facts, figures, math, historic and current studies. Designing a building with structural engineering principles is basically LOGOS on paper.

Aside from the logical meaning, I like LOGOS because of the way it is used in John 1:1. "In the beginning was the Word...." The Word = LOGOS. My family and I have anchored the ship that is our life to that Word, Jesus Christ. God is the center of our life and we need Him.

In the first post on this blog, I alluded to 2018 being a year of extremes for my family. In May, we experienced deepest loss with the death of our 6 year old daughter, Lydia Mae. We have seen how our local church supported, and continues to support, us with love and grace through this loss. We have seen our 4 year old daughter deal with the loss of her sister like a little cork. The waves of grief wash over her, but her joy for life pops her right back up. The LOGOS of John 1:1, Jesus Christ, is walking with us through this valley of death, and He will see us through.

I chose the name LOGOS for it's logical meaning but I love it for the reminder of who has my life in His hands. So yes, 2018 has been an extreme year, and with the excitement of starting a new business, 2019 will be another extreme. Whatever this year has to give, I know God is good all the time, and all the time God is good.

If you ever find yourself in need of structural engineering, let me know!
